The White Lady
According to Legend there was a castle or fort at
Tamworth in the 'Dark ages' where the White Lady is said to have been
captured and locked in the Tower by Sir Tarquin. After a while she fell in
love with him and became his mistress. In 519 A.D. Sir Lancelot du Lac
came to rescue her and slew Sir Tarquin in the Lady Meadows below the
Castle. Legend has it that white lady still roams the battlements mourning
for her lover.
The Black Lady
In 1139 Baron Marmion was visited in his bed by
the ghost of St Editha who ordered him to restore the Abbey at Polesworth.
Before she disappeared she struck the Baron with her crosier causing a
painful wound in his side. The Baron suffered great pain and fever until
he gave the order for the restoration of the abbey. The ghost of St.
Editha is still said to haunt the bedroom and stairs to this day.
